PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Axis: "ENHANCEMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES AND CULTURAL HERITAGE IN THE PROGRAM AREA"

Measure:  "PROMOTION AND PROTECTION OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES OF THE AREA"

The procurement was carried out to achieve the upgrade of the WWTP's operation through the new automation, communication, and measurement equipment, as well as the implementation of an integrated facility management system via a SCADA system.

To ensure better motor management, energy savings, and protection of the motors from wear and tear, variable speed drives (INVERTERS) were installed on the motors of various units, such as pumps, blowers, air compressors, etc.

All individual units of the WWTP are monitored by the Local Control Stations, which are installed at specific locations within the facility and consist of:

  • Programmable Logic Controllers PLCs and their auxiliary equipment (additional analog and digital input/output cards)
  • the DC-UPS units with appropriate battery modules to ensure uninterrupted power supply to the equipment
  • communication equipment with wireless capabilities operating at 2.4GHz or 5GHz frequencies
  • the necessary equipment such as relays, fuses, automatic circuit breakers, etc.

Another important aspect of the WWTP upgrade process is the installation of new instruments for the continuous measurement of quality parameters, which are critical for the efficient and specification-compliant operation of the plant. More specifically, instruments were installed to enable the measurement of parameters such as:

  • Dissolved Oxygen (DO) concentration and Mixed Liquor Suspended Solids (MLSS) in the Biological Treatment Tanks
  • Suspended solids concentration at the Sludge Recirculation Pumping Station
  • Sludge level in the sedimentation tanks

Additionally, to enable continuous and accurate recording of water and wastewater flow at various points of the WWTP, two portable ultrasonic flow metersof the Clamp-On type were installed. These include an Electronic Transmitter – Controller, measurement sensors with their corresponding mounting and connection accessories, and a complete Testing Kit.

Were also installed, level measurement instruments or flow measurement instruments, using technology ultrasonic technology, for the continuous recording of the level or volume in manholes / water / wastewater tanks, which consist of a controller and a high-precision, high-reliability ultrasonic sensor.

The Monitoring, Control, and Data Collection System (SCADA) that was installed consists of state-of-the-art technologies regarding its structure and operation. Additionally, it is fully open and scalable for modifications and future requirements of the facility.

To ensure the functionality of the entire system, even under challenging conditions such as those of a WWTP, a computerwith appropriate industrial specifications was installed at the facility's Control Center.

This computer is equipped with the SCADA WINCC softwareand features a 21’’ LCD TFT high-resolution screen suitable for extended operation. The specific computer is certified for use both in office and industrial environments, is suitable for installation in a 19’’ rack, and, among other features, includes monitoring and diagnostic functions for program execution, operating temperature, and fan speed.

Additionally, for the ability to intervene locally at the control stations of the WWTP units, beyond access via the control center, a portable computer with the latest technology specifications was procured.

The equipment that was procured is detailed below:

  • Four (4) electrical automation panels for WWTP units (PLC-DCUPS)
  • Five (5) wireless communication equipment units
  • Two (2) portable flow measurement equipment units
  • Three (3) level or flow measurement instruments
  • One (1) quality measurement instrument
  • Sixteen (16) speed control devices (INVERTER)
  • One (1) SCADA software system
  • One SCADA computer
  • One portable computer
